A couple of new dates have been scheduled for the Food Photography and Styling Workshop - both in Sydney and Melbourne; hit me with an email if you are interested in attending; full details about the two classes on my workshops page
The image above is an example of the type of work we'll be doing; this one was a 2 lights setup , with flash; we " build " the images from scratch, one step at the time, food styling, composition, lighting and a little bit of editing - it's good fun !
The one below instead was an exercise on how to shoot very reflective food/ ingredients, and it was shot by the window, with natural light.

Food photography is a tricky thing but sometimes, actually most of the times, the better way to go about it is to keep it simple - and by this I mean not overcomplicating things.
The image above is a good example: just one light source to light both the subject and the background, accompanied by a white cardboard reflector to add a bit more dimension to those eggplants.
Quick and easy, but clean and effective; don't you agree?
The light source is very closed to the background , but it points away from it hence creating a nice separation between the eggplants and the background itself.
The eggplants skin is very reflective therefore you want to make sure you expose for those highlights and you don't loose detail of the skin.
Here is a lighting diagram to illustrate the simple setup I used; I hope it all makes sense to you

This cider bottle looks nice and cold, doesn't it? well.... it's not, it's actually at room temperature - that is around 30°in Sydney at the moment.
To make a drink look like this, is a simple styling trick often used for editorial and advertising food photography: one coat of adehesive spray + water mixed with glycerine - balance is the key, as usual ( and better to spray in a well ventilated area ).
I have always adopted this styling technique: the drink will look like frozen for enough time to wrap the photo shoot.
Hit me in the comments if you know a better trick!
